Writer's picture: Stephanie FullerStephanie Fuller

You may have heard about this type of therapy before, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, also referred to as DBT. It is a type of psychotherapy to support people in learning new skills and strategies to build better lives. It has been shown effective and commonly used for mental health conditions, such as Borderline Personality Disorder, Eating Disorders, and PTSD. However, several DBT skills and strategies can be helpful for anyone.

1. Distress Tolerance Strategies

You can learn strategies to cope with stressful times in your life.

2. Interpersonal Effectiveness Skills

You can learn skills of creating and maintaining relationships, how to say no and ask for what you need, and how to maintain self-respect in communicating. DBT further teaches you how to communicate in a thoughtful way rather than impulsively due to intense emotions or distress. Such skills can impact the quality of relationships you have.

3. Mindfulness Skill

With mindfulness you learn how to be in the present moment without judgement. If one can learn to be mindful, they can have more control over their mind than their mind over them.

4. Emotion Regulation Skills

DBT teaches emotion regulation skills which allow people to better identify and understand their emotions, decrease the frequency of unpleasant emotions, their vulnerability to unpleasant emotions, and decrease emotional suffering.
