Many create a New Year’s resolution come January 1st. Some even may feel pressured to set one. There are resolutions, including to lose weight, develop a hobby, to name a few. With a new year and resolutions there is often hope, until a few months later these new year resolutions are abandoned.
But Why are New Year’s Resolutions abandoned?
1. The resolution has no small steps.
To change or create a new behaviour, there is going to be discomfort experienced. To set a resolution that is big to start out with, there is no ease or preparation into the discomfort, no tolerance to be gained. Creating steps can be helpful.
2. The reasoning behind needs to be answered
It is important to know your internal motivations for the resolution. If you feel like you should be doing this, such as from external pressures, you may come to hate it and therefore, abandon it. If you can determine the reason you are doing it, you may find other ways to achieve the resolution that are more enjoyable or bring more motivation to the plan you have to achieve your resolution.
3. The resolution is not aligned with who you are
Your identity is who you believe you are. If your resolution is something that is inconsistent with who you are, you are less likely to be motivated or satisfied in working towards it, than if it is aligned with who you are.
4. You are not ready
There are stages to change, and you need to be in the action stage of change: you make the change, to be able to follow through with the resolution.
